Homelessness in Manchester remains a growing crisis despite years of awareness and advocacy. Even with the campaigns and lobbying efforts led by Smile Aid since 2015, the statistics show that rough sleeping and homelessness continue to rise, underscoring the urgent need for systemic change.
The Reality
Rising Numbers: As of 2025, Manchester continues to see an increase in homelessness. Nationally, more than 300,000 households in England are experiencing homelessness in its worst forms, including rough sleeping, sofa surfing, and temporary accommodation.
Local Impact: Manchester has been highlighted as one of the hardest-hit cities, with rough sleeping rates climbing year-on-year. Reports show that despite awareness campaigns, the demand for shelters and support services has outpaced provision.
Deaths and Vulnerability: The city has also recorded a troubling rise in homeless deaths, reflecting the harsh realities of life on the streets and the inadequacy of current interventions.
Smile Aid’s Role Since 2015
Hands-On Advocacy: Smile Aid has worked tirelessly since 2015 to confront homelessness head-on. We have taken the Commissioner of Police, the Commander of the British Army, MPs, and councillors directly to the streets to witness the issue firsthand.
Lobbying for Dignity: Our lobbying has focused on humanising rough sleepers, challenging the narrative that reduces them to mere government statistics. We have consistently argued that every individual deserves dignity, compassion, and recognition as part of society.
Awareness Campaigns: Through events, outreach, and direct engagement, Smile Aid has raised awareness across Manchester, ensuring that homelessness is not ignored or hidden.
The Challenge Ahead
Despite these efforts, homelessness continues to grow. The cost-of-living crisis, housing shortages, and welfare gaps have all contributed to worsening conditions. Awareness alone has not been enough to reverse the trend; structural reforms in housing policy, welfare support, and local authority funding are urgently needed.
