What is Nisab? Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth a Muslim must possess to be eligible to pay Zakat. This value is calculated based on the weight of gold or silver.

  • Nisab Values for 2025(as of 3 March 2025):
    • Silver (612.36 grams): £487.43
    • Gold (87.48 grams): £6,403.03

The nisab threshold updates daily based on the market value of gold and silver.

How is Zakat Calculated in 2025? Eligible Muslims pay Zakat annually, once a lunar year has passed since their wealth meets or exceeds the nisab threshold.

Our step-by-step Zakat calculator simplifies this process by dividing your finances into:

  1. Zakatable Assets: Gold, silver, cash, savings, business assets, etc.
  2. Deductible Liabilities: Outstanding debts or financial obligations.

Simply input your figures, and the calculator will determine whether you owe Zakat and calculate the precise amount based on your net assets.

Step-by-Step Example of Zakat Calculation

  1. Add your assets: Include gold, silver, savings, investments, shares, business assets, and money owed to you. Example: Gold & Silver: £1,000 Bank Savings: £10,000 Total Assets: £11,000
  2. Deduct liabilities: Subtract money owed, fines, or other financial obligations. Example: Money owed: £1,000 Fine: £500 Total Liabilities: £1,500
  3. Calculate net assets: Assets (£11,000) – Liabilities (£1,500) = £9,500
  4. Compare net assets to the nisab: If your net assets exceed the nisab threshold, you owe Zakat.
  5. Determine Zakat owed: Zakat is 2.5% of your net assets. Example: £9,500 x 2.5% = £237.50

Our Zakat calculator takes care of these calculations for you—just input your details, and we’ll do the rest!

What is Zakat Based On? Zakat is calculated on your Zakatable wealth, which includes:

  • Gold and silver
  • Cash and savings
  • Investments and shares
  • Business assets

It’s not limited to income or savings alone. Every adult Muslim of sound mind who owns wealth exceeding the nisab threshold is obligated to pay 2.5% of their Zakatable wealth.

Use our Zakat calculator to determine your eligibility and payment amount quickly and easily.

Calculating Zakat on Cash Start by totaling your cash from all sources over the past year, including:

  • Cash at home
  • Bank accounts
  • Money owed to you

Deduct any outstanding financial obligations (debts or outgoings due). If the resulting amount exceeds the nisab, you owe Zakat at 2.5% of the net amount.

Remember: Calculate Zakat on cash alongside other assets such as gold, silver, and investments.

Debts and Liabilities: What to Deduct When calculating Zakat, you can deduct certain debts and liabilities from your total Zakatable assets, including:

  • Debts payable within 12 months.
  • 12 months’ worth of installments for longer-term debts.
  • Overdue payments or arrears.

What cannot be deducted:

  • Future expenses or bills not yet due.
  • Long-term debts payable beyond 12 months (beyond the upcoming installment).
  • Interest payments, as interest (riba) is haram.

For mortgages, student loans, or long-term debts, only amounts due within the next 12 months can be deducted.

If others owe you money and you believe it will be repaid, Zakat must also be paid on these funds.

Zakat and Tax in the UK Zakat rules intersect with UK tax regulations. Here’s how:

  • Overdue taxes (like income tax) are deductible as debt, reducing your Zakatable wealth.
  • Money saved for future tax payments can also be deducted from the total Zakat amount.
  • Personal taxes, such as road tax, are not deductible.

How Much Zakat Should You Pay in the UK? Determine your Zakat by calculating your net assets.

  • If your net assets equal or exceed the nisab, you owe 2.5%.
  • If your net assets are below the nisab, you are not required to pay Zakat.
